MP5

The MP-5 is a German submachinegun chambered for 9x19 that entered service in 1966. The weapon has the appearance of a scaled-down G3 rifle, from the same manufacturer. Perhaps the most recognizable SMG in the world along with the UZI and MAC-10, it is found in the inventories of police force, the Navy SEALS and the British SAS.

Variants

The weapon is offered as two different variants in EFT. However these are just renamed versions of the same base weapon in EFT. The MP5 and MP5 SD share the same lower receiver ("base weapon") and are therefore not two different weapons, like the AK-74 and the AK-74N, but the same weapon with a different upper receiver.

  • MP-5
Base variant, featuring semi-automatic and automatic firemodes (800 RPM).

  • MP-5 SD
A variant with an integral suppressor. A special feature of the suppressor is that it slows supersonic ammo down to subsonic speeds.

MP-5 ammo

The 9x19 is a standard pistol and SMG caliber for various weapons in EFT. Its advantages are good damage due to the large bullet diameter and relatively low recoil impulse, which makes it suitable for firing from pistols with moderate recoil. However firing it from SMGs lowers the recoil as the larger weapon mass absorbs more of it.

The ammo selection offers 6 different types. The PST and AP 6.3 are the armor-piercing solutions of the 9x19 selection and then the PSO and CCI offer gradual reduction in penetration in exchange for more damage. The RIP trades most of its armor penetration for damage.
The numbers 13 and 20 are significant for armor penetration. As these are the limits of that armor classes 2 and 3 can withstand. The CCI is slightly below a guaranteed penetration for class 2 armor. And the PST is below class 3 penetration. The AP 6.3 reaches beyond the 21 penetration required for class 3 armor.

MP-5 Shooting

At a weight of 3kg and a short length, the weapon goes to ADS quick and recoil is low (MP-5) or virtually non-existent (MP-5 SD). On semi auto, this allows for very precise shot placement and fast follow up shots. The recoil on full auto (800 RPM) is notable, but far less than a rifle caliber.

MP-5 Modding

Out of the box, the MP-5 modding possibilities are very limited. Stock and magazine sizes are available. Rail systems have to be purchased after-market, and these are on average three times more expensive than comparable items for a Vityaz. And for comparison, the MPX comes already pre-installed with rail systems. This makes the MP-5 the least mod-friendly 9x19 SMG, unless the user is willing to pay for it. It is a rare sight among players, and a modded one is even harder to encounter. An MP-5 with a foregrip and a red dot can cost as much as a stock M4A1 rifle.

Various tactical purposes of the MP-5:

  • All-Purpose Submachinegun
Compact, cheap, controllable full-auto makes it excel at any close to mid-range situations. However it will start losing out when trading shots with assault rifles.

  • Covert Ops
The SD parts kit offers an integral suppressor, which keeps weapon length shorter than an MP-5 with a custom suppressor. Plus the suppressor slows any ammo used down to subsonic without the need for specialized ammo.

  • Sub-Compact
With the stock cap, the size of an MP-5 is effectively cut down by 30%. At first glance this appears not that useful. Why shorten the length of a weapon that is very compact, and increasing recoil because of the missing stock?

    There are advantages to it:

    • A removed stock shortens the weapon, making it very easy to handle in tight areas, like doorframes.
    • The very short size increases the ADS speed, making it as fast to raise as a pistol, but with the full barrel length of an MP-5.

  • Fire Support
With a 50-round drum magazine, the MP-5 can be used a fire support machine gun to provide cover fire for team mates to move in on the enemy while the continous fire keeps them down.

MP-5 Summary

Compact, versatile and prestigious. The weapon's substantial weight makes for a stable firing platform to shoot 9x19 rounds with reasonable accuracy at up to 150 meters. The controllable full auto at 800 RPM can win against slow 650 RPM AK-wielding opponents in very tight quarters firefights. A cost-effective weapon unless you want to mod it. When it comes to moddability, the Vityaz and MPX will run circles around the MP-5 as the conservative stock configuration of it offers no rail systems.

Class 4 targets are immune to 9x19 fire, which limits the tactical potential in long range engagements, as the high ROF can not be used to chew up armor quick.

Accuracy 8/10
With an accuracy of 0.2 the MP-5 is not the most accurate SMG for 9x19.

Recoil 8/10
Very controllable recoil even with full auto 800 RPM.

Ammo 3/10
9x19 offers good damage and limited penetration. Mild recoil in full-sized SMGs.

Weapon-specific Modding 5/10
The options are limited to various stocks and magazine sizes. The MP-5 SD conversion kit offers conversation to a very efficient suppressed weapons platform.

General Modding 2/10
Base configuration offers no mounting rail systems. With after-market rail systems installed, the modding options expand to front and top rail-mounted parts.
